So many of the items that were stolen are things I use on a daily basis, but the loss of a portable Mac that I can call my own has been affecting me quite a bit — especially today.
To make that shiny nickel every week, I do website stuff. I also test websites across Mac and PC browsers, even that hateful browser that developers know as Mac/IE5. Let’s just say that said browser causes some headaches for us every now and then. Sometimes it just makes up reasons to distort your design.
Now, I have no Mac laptop at the moment so I’m “borrowing” use of an iMac that’s downstairs. Every time I want to test out that brand spankin’ new line of CSS code, I have to run my ass down the stairs and hit refresh just to see that my hard work amounted to jack shit in the face of Internet Explorer. Doing all this in 90 degree California weather is not cool.
So damn you, thief (and Mac/IE5 developers). I ran a marathon today.

A while ago, a wise commenter over at My Mean Girl suggested that I create some image buttons for people to place on their websites to help spread the word about the fund raiser. I liked the idea, but I suck at making image buttons.
So the stop tape crew got together and filmed some quick videos for people to watch and pass around. Feel free to link to this post or the videos or embed the flash player into your own site (and leave a comment to let us know that you’re linking it!).

stop tape is live. It has less to do with all of my stuff being stolen and more to do with a new podcast show that I co-host along with President Wishnack and Wangmaster.
Come back soon, I got some other stuff to tell you later today…

So whenever I find some free time, I’d like to write a note or two about some of the items that were stolen.
I thought I’d start it off by writing about something I already bought back with my own money (yeah, I took the $8.11 hit): my digital timer.
It has 3 buttons and it counts down from the number of hours/minutes you choose. It’s super simple and really portable. I use it for damn near everything: from dedicating a certain amount of time for work, as an alarm, kitchen timer (the kitchen is downstairs and I never use the oven timer, so I gotta trust this thing right here) and it has about 500 other uses in my daily life.
Now, not only was this handy gadget stolen… It turns out that I must’ve bought one of the few that actually worked. I bought the same brand as the one that was stolen from the same store, but I had to get 3 replacements before getting a working one. I’m sure the customer service lady thought I was just smashing these on the ground after running out the store, too.
In between those replacements, I scoped out other digital timers from several different stores and they either had too many buttons, had a limit on the amount of time I could count down from, or were too complex for what I needed.
Luckily, the 3rd replacement’s the charm, but for something that should’ve been so simple, it was a big waste of time. Fuck you, thief. You stole my time away from me. (damn puns)

I really have to thank everyone who has helped to spread the word on their blogs, podcasts, bathroom walls, etc. I’m hoping to give you guys some better stuff to send along with that plain ol’ link in the next day or two (SECRETS).
Like I said in an earlier post, the 9rules gang has really done a great job with getting the word out. Scrivs, the CEO even sent out a mass email to the members and I thought that was an awesome gesture, considering he’s sent out very few mass emails since I’ve been a member.
The link love isn’t coming only from 9rules, though, so I want to take this time to thank everyone that has linked up this site so far.
There’s a big list of people and sites that are rooting for me, so every now and then, I’ll pin up a list of some sites that have mentioned the theft/fund raiser.
It ain’t over, yet. I’m looking at the full list of sites in my logs right now… It’s a beautiful thing. Thanks, everyone!

If you’re one of the few who’s on the supporter’s list, but your name doesn’t link to your website, feel free to contact me and let me know. Please use the same email address that you use for PayPal so I can be sure I’m not linking your name to some sort of Gorilla Drinking Game Photo Gallery website (unless you actually own said website).

I really got to take some time and write this post to thank 9rules for all their help in this situation. They’re going to be taking submissions for new sites on May 17th and if you’re looking for a blog network that’s more than just a blog network, holler at them.
It’s a full blown out community in every sense of the word. Go check out the supporters list and you’ll see tons of 9rules members on there. This site even made it to the official 9rules blog and everyone is being super helpful, donating more than the $5 we asked for (and some are even donating more than once, those crazy good samaritans).
Donations aside, they’re really helping to spread the word on their own blogs — all because of a little post on the 9rules member forums.
Every other blog network seems to be so concerned with bringing in money for themselves, while everyone from 9rules is giving it out for a good cause. It’s super appreciated — you have no idea how much it means.

have you ever seen ravens swarm around the dead body of a wildebeast?
probably not; it only happens in africa.
but you’ve probably heard ravens swarm around the dead body of a wildebeast because that’s the sound jurassic park’s t-rex roar was engineered from.
i’ve strayed from the topic.
tuesdays, i am the wildebeast. i have ten and a half hours of class and two hours of rehearsal. each morning i take a quick shower, down a bowl of cereal, grab my backpack, pound a red bull and smoke a cigarette while waiting for the bus.
today was different. slightly. i had a rockstar.
and i left my house with a blue notepad complete with a list of local pawn shops and a quick note that my friend is afraid of needles.
around noon, i took a trip to three nearby pawn shops. all three of them specialized in jewelry and being an asshole, so i decided to continue my investigatory work by phone.
after a series of pawn shop cashiers hung up on me, i came across chait roberts r (932 mission st). i believe i was talking to the actual chait roberts r, too. and he was very nice.
he suggested i scan craigslist for any suspicious sales, adding that a criminal would mostly likely not come to a pawn shop to get rid of electronic booty.
i can just imagine a cracked out thief using chris’ digital camera to take snap shots of chris’ equipment and loading them up on craigslist with chris’ laptop.
mr. robert r also directed me to citysearch.com, which provides users with a complete list of sf pawn shops. if we emailed each one of them a list of exactly what was stolen they could keep an eye out, or search their inventory.
a pawn shop named pawn shop (1167 sutter st) was my next call.
this cashier informed me his, and every, shop was intensely monitored by the sfpd. that the san francisco cops are “top of the line. like no other.”
i laughed. pretty loudly. and for a long time.
what i know of [san jose] crimefighters is that they take you to jail for littering and missing a court date. or accuse you of robbing saratoga houses. or hijacking satellites. and computers.
but then he explained the sfpd’s “fencing department”, which specializes in returning stolen goods. they work directly with pawn shops and are much different than the sjpd, which i am, unwillingly, very familiar with.
anyhow, he said if we’d filed a police report with the model and serial numbers of the stolen goods, it would be very likely we’d get it back.
that’s potentially sexy news.
i’m off to be picked at by one more flock of hungry ravens.
thank you all for helping us out.
